The Studio at Velvet Mill is inside the 135-year-old Velvet Mill in historic Stonington Borough in Southeastern CT. It is located steps from Stonington Harbor, 10 minutes from Westerly, 45 minutes from Providence, an hour from New Haven or Hartford, 90 minutes from Boston, and 2½ hours from NYC. The Studio at Velvet Mill can be rented virtually any time.

The Studio at Velvet Mill is located at 22 Bayview Avenue, Stonington, CT 06378. The closest entrance to the studio is through the black double doors at the corner of Bayview and Meadow Avenues. The closest parking is on Meadow Avenue, at the sculpture park—keep driving past the main parking for the Velvet Mill, continue to the end of Bayview Ave, and turn left onto Meadow Ave to park.

If arriving by train, take Amtrak to Mystic, and get an Uber, Lyft, or taxi for the last three miles to The Studio.

Velvet Mill

The Studio at Velvet Mill is inside the Velvet Mill, which was built by the town in 1888 to encourage economic development. It operated as a velvet manufacturer for 100 years. Today, the Velvet Mill has been reimagined as a collaborative, community home to artists, craftspeople, small businesses, restaurants, and entrepreneurs, including The Studio at Velvet Mill.

On Saturday mornings, the Velvet Mill hosts a farmers’ market and many shops hold open-door hours. It is a very popular and busy event attended by all kinds of people and their dogs. The Studio at Velvet Mill and the Velvet Mill as a whole are safe spaces for people from all backgrounds, ethnicities, races, sexuality, and genders, abilities, ages, and sizes.

Logistics

Access to The Studio at Velvet Mill is with a keypad, so touchless, private, discrete entry can be assured in the case of sensitive content or talent. Accessible restrooms are located outside the studio, within the Velvet Mill. Restaurants, bakeries, coffeeshops, and bars are available within the building, and ample free, safe parking is available. Outside The Studio at Velvet Mill is a sculpture park with views of Stonington Harbor. Equipment can be loaded through double doors just outside The Studio at Velvet Mill, at the corner of Bayview and Meadow Avenues, with one step up and two steps down. Alternatively, there is a ramp at the front entrance to the building with a freight elevator to reach The Studio at Velvet Mill.
